Humberstone & Santa Laura Saltpeter Works

Just 47 km from Alto Hospicio across the pampa, the twin ghost towns of Humberstone and Santa Laura are among the most haunting and beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Americas — an entire nitrate-boom civilization left standing in the desert air, perfectly preserved by the Atacama's legendary dryness.

The White Gold Ghost Towns

The Humberstone and Santa Laura saltpeter works, located in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile, were once the economic engine of an entire nation. At their peak they housed thousands of workers — pampinos — who lived, worked, worshipped and danced inside a self-contained world of company stores, theatres and swimming pools, all of it now silent.

Walking the streets of Humberstone today feels like stepping onto a film set. The old theatre still has its wooden seats, the pulpería shelves are stocked with period tins, and the Olympic-sized pool — once filled with Pacific seawater piped across the desert — still stands, cracked and magnificent.

Two Sites, One Story

Santa Laura, a short walk from Humberstone, preserves the industrial machinery side of the story: the crushing mills, the leaching tanks and the towering iron skeleton of the nitrate plant rise against an impossibly blue sky. The contrast between Humberstone's domestic intimacy and Santa Laura's raw industrial scale makes visiting both essential.

Both sites were declared UNESCO World Heritage in 2005, recognising their outstanding testimony to the birth, growth and decline of the nitrate industry that defined Chile's economy between the 19th and 20th centuries. Guided tours in Spanish and English are available on site.
