Mirador Alto Hospicio
Perched 600 metres above the Pacific, the main mirador of Alto Hospicio delivers one of northern Chile's most theatrical panoramas — the entire bay of Iquique spread below, Cerro Dragón's sand dune rising from the city edge, and the infinite Atacama stretching inland. Come at golden hour and the desert floor turns amber while the ocean goes silver.
A View Worth the Climb
Alto Hospicio sits 600 m above its coastal neighbour Iquique, and the escarpment edge is essentially a natural observation deck that money could never build. From the mirador you take in the full sweep of Iquique Bay, the Pacific horizon, and the bone-dry pampa all at once — three utterly different worlds in a single glance.
The lookout is also the city's favourite family gathering spot at weekends. Locals arrive with thermoses of mate, children run along the ridge path, and the atmosphere is warm and unhurried — a genuine slice of hospiciano daily life rather than a polished tourist attraction.
Paragliding Launch Pad
The mirador doubles as the preferred take-off point for tandem paragliding pilots who ride the coastal thermals from the clifftop all the way down to the beaches near Iquique — a jaw-dropping flight that crosses desert, cliff and ocean in a single arc.
Certified operators based in Iquique shuttle clients up to Alto Hospicio for the launch, making the experience accessible even for first-timers. Expect a 20–30 minute flight and a soft landing on the sand.
