The Square Itself
Plaza Alta is the historic nerve centre of Algeciras, a space full of traditional Andalusian architecture and a lively, lived-in atmosphere that no guidebook can fully capture. Locals argue over football at the café tables while tourists photograph the tiled benches — an unusual detail that pays homage to Cervantes' Don Quixote de la Mancha.
The square hosts cultural events and festivals throughout the year, making the timing of your visit almost irrelevant: there is always something happening here, from impromptu flamenco to seasonal markets spilling out of the surrounding lanes.
The Church of La Palma
Anchoring the northern edge of the square, the neoclassical Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Palma has been declared a Site of Cultural Interest in the General Catalogue of Andalusian Historical Heritage, classified as a monument. It serves as headquarters for several of the city's most important brotherhoods, including La Palma and the Nazarene.
Inside, look for a 17th-century sculpture of Saint Joseph and the more recent Risen Jesus by sculptor Israel Cornejo — a striking juxtaposition of centuries that sums up Algeciras itself.
