Mirador del Estrecho (Strait of Gibraltar Viewpoint)

Perched at around 300 metres above sea level on the road between Algeciras and Tarifa, the Mirador del Estrecho offers one of the most geographically thrilling views on the planet — Africa is right there, close enough to feel implausible.

The View That Stops You Cold

From this balcony above the strait you can see the silhouette of Jebel Musa (Monte Musa) rising to 851 metres on the Moroccan coast, the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, and a constant procession of container ships, ferries and tankers threading the world's busiest shipping lane. On a clear night, the lights of Tangier are plainly visible from Algeciras itself.

The Mirador del Estrecho is positioned where the Mediterranean and Atlantic meet, making it a prime spot during the twice-yearly bird migration, when hundreds of thousands of raptors, storks and eagles funnel through the narrow gap between continents — one of Europe's great wildlife spectacles.

Getting There and Making the Most of It

The viewpoint sits just off the N-340 road, roughly 6 km from Tarifa and easily reachable by car from Algeciras in under 30 minutes. There is a small car park and a bar on site — the perfect excuse to linger over a coffee while the strait does its thing below you.

Birdwatchers should aim for September–October (southbound migration) or March–April (northbound) and bring binoculars. Even outside migration season, the sheer drama of watching Africa materialise through the morning haze makes this one of the most memorable stops on any Costa de la Luz road trip.
