This is not just a place to buy tomatoes — it is one of the most architecturally audacious market buildings in Spain, and it still buzzes every morning with the best of the Campo de Gibraltar's produce. Step inside and look up before you do anything else.
A Dome That Made History
Designed by pioneering civil engineer Eduardo Torroja Miret and executed with architect Manuel Sánchez Arcas, the market was inaugurated in 1935. Its sweeping concrete dome held the Guinness World Record for the world's largest dome for three decades, until the Houston Astrodome claimed the title in 1965.
The building was declared a National Heritage site by the Andalusian Regional Government as an outstanding example of rationalist, modernist architecture — functional, stripped of ornament, and breathtakingly bold for its era. The octagonal floor plan beneath that dome is a spatial experience money cannot replicate.
What to Buy, What to Taste
Inside, stalls are piled with fresh fish hauled from the Bay of Algeciras that morning, alongside cuts of meat, seasonal vegetables, charcutería, and artisan food shops. Outdoor stalls from local producers ring the market square on Plaza Nuestra Señora de la Palma, adding colour and noise to the whole scene.
Seek out the stalls specialising in bull meat — a Campo de Gibraltar tradition — and the inner-circle vendors selling smoked paprika, dried beans and cured meats that travel well. A couple of bar counters inside offer coffee and tapas if the energy of the place makes you hungry on the spot.
