Parque de la Comunidad de Madrid (Parque Norte)
Stretching across more than 160 hectares on Alcobendas's southern edge, Parque Norte is one of the largest urban parks in the Madrid region — a sculpted landscape of lakes, pine groves and cycling paths that most tourists never discover. Come on a weekday morning and you'll have the herons, joggers and picnicking families almost entirely to yourself.
What to See and Do
The park's central lake is the social heart of the space, ringed by weeping willows and dotted with ducks that seem entirely unbothered by the city humming just beyond the tree line. Rent a rowing boat on weekends or simply follow the lakeside promenade as it curves past sculpted gardens and open-air fitness stations.
A network of dedicated cycling and running tracks weaves through the pine forest, making this a favourite escape for Alcobendas residents who want distance from Madrid's traffic without leaving the metro area. Bring a bike from the city — the BiciMAD network connects nearby — or walk the 5 km perimeter loop at a leisurely pace.
Best Times and Hidden Corners
Spring is the park's showiest season, when ornamental cherry trees near the main entrance erupt in pale pink blossom and the air smells faintly of cut grass and water. Autumn rivals it, turning the avenue of plane trees into a tunnel of amber and gold.
Seek out the quieter northern section, away from the children's play areas, where a small stream feeds a reed-fringed wetland that attracts migrating warblers and kingfishers in October and November. It feels genuinely wild for a park inside a metropolitan area.
