Mercado Municipal de Alcobendas

The Mercado Municipal on Calle Doctor Fleming is where Alcobendas does its real shopping — a covered market hall buzzing with fishmongers, jamón carvers, cheese vendors and greengrocers who have held the same stalls for decades. It is refreshingly unglamourised, which is precisely what makes it worth visiting.

What to Buy and Taste

The fish counters are exceptional for an inland city, supplied daily from Mercamadrid, Spain's vast wholesale fish market. You'll find whole lubina, razor clams still smelling of the Atlantic and salt-crusted bacalao stacked in creamy-white slabs. Watch the vendors fillet to order with practised speed.

The charcuterie stalls are the place to assemble a serious picnic: paper-thin slices of jamón ibérico de bellota, wedges of aged Manchego, olives marinated with orange peel and thyme, and crusty pan de pueblo from the bakery at the far end of the hall. Prices are noticeably lower than equivalent products in central Madrid.

Market Culture and Timing

Saturday morning is the market at its most alive — locals arrive early with wheeled trolleys, greet stallholders by name and linger over coffee at the small bar tucked into the corner near the entrance. It is an entirely authentic slice of suburban Madrid life that no tour operator will ever put on an itinerary.

Come before noon to catch the widest selection; by 2 pm most stalls begin packing down. The market is closed on Sundays and public holidays, so plan accordingly.
