Museo de Arte Contemporáneo al Aire Libre de Alcobendas
Alcobendas has quietly assembled one of Spain's most accessible open-air contemporary art collections, scattering more than 40 monumental sculptures by internationally recognised artists across the city's streets, roundabouts and plazas. It costs nothing to see, requires no booking and rewards an aimless afternoon stroll like few urban experiences can.
The Collection on the Streets
Works by Jorge Oteiza, Cristina Iglesias and Martín Chirino punctuate the city's main boulevards, turning an ordinary walk between the town hall and the Parque Norte into an impromptu gallery visit. The pieces range from polished steel abstractions that mirror the sky to rough-hewn stone figures that seem to grow from the pavement.
The most photographed piece is a large-scale geometric sculpture on the Avenida de la Industria corridor, whose mirrored surfaces catch the late-afternoon Madrid light and project it in unexpected directions. Locals walk past it daily without a second glance — which makes stopping to stare feel delightfully transgressive.
How to Follow the Route
The Alcobendas city council publishes a free printed map of the sculpture route, available from the tourist information point inside the Ayuntamiento on Plaza Mayor. The full circuit covers roughly 6 km and can be done comfortably in two to three hours on foot.
If you prefer a shorter version, the densest cluster of works sits between the Parque Norte entrance and the Avenida de España, making a satisfying 45-minute loop. Audio guides in Spanish and English are downloadable from the municipal website.
