Museo Civico di Albano Laziale

Housed inside a beautifully restored 17th-century building on Via Aurelio Saffi, this compact civic museum punches well above its weight, displaying artefacts from Alba Longa — the mythological mother-city of Rome — through to the permanent Legio II Parthica camp that occupied this very hillside. It is one of the most underrated Roman archaeology museums in the entire Castelli Romani area.

The Collection

The ground floor is dedicated to pre-Roman and early Latin material including funerary urns, bronze fibulae and black-glaze pottery excavated from the necropolis beneath the modern city. Bilingual labels (Italian and English) make the context accessible even for casual visitors.

The upper floor tackles the Roman imperial period head-on, with scale models of the Castra Albana — the vast legionary fortress built by Septimius Severus around 202 AD — alongside original stone inscriptions, military equipment and a haunting collection of funerary steles left by soldiers who died far from home.

Don't Miss

The museum's star exhibit is a large mosaic floor section lifted from a Roman villa on the lake's edge, its geometric patterns still vivid after 1,800 years. It sits in a dedicated room with low lighting and a magnifying panel so you can appreciate the individual tesserae.

Ask at the desk about the free Saturday-morning guided walks that combine the museum with the nearby Anfiteatro Romano di Albano, a 2nd-century amphitheatre whose arched vaults you can still walk through just 400 metres away.
