Bosco di Turno & Sentiero del Lago
Wrapping around the northern and western flanks of Lago Albano, the Bosco di Turno is a protected woodland of holm oaks, wild strawberry trees and laurel that has changed little since Latin tribes sheltered here three millennia ago. The Sentiero del Lago — a waymarked trail of roughly 10 km — circles the entire crater rim and lake edge, offering constant shade and sudden lake-glitter through the t
The Trail
The most rewarding section starts from the public car park at Loc. Casali di Mola on the south shore and follows the lakeshore north through dense woodland before climbing gently to the crater rim near Castel Gandolfo. The path is well-signed with red-and-white CAI markers and is suitable for fit walkers in regular trainers — no technical gear needed.
Along the way you pass the Emissario di Lago Albano, a 4th-century BC Roman tunnel carved through the volcanic rock to regulate the lake level during the siege of Veii. You can peer into its dark mouth from the path — it is still functional after 2,400 years, which is either impressive or mildly terrifying depending on your perspective.
Wildlife and Seasons
Spring (April–May) is peak season: wild cyclamen, anemones and orchids carpet the forest floor, and the lake surface is dotted with great crested grebes nesting in the reed beds. Autumn brings porcini mushrooms and the sharp smell of fermenting leaves — locals forage here on October mornings with baskets and a quiet intensity that brooks no interruption.
The lake itself supports populations of coots, mallards and the occasional kingfisher visible as a streak of electric blue along the water's edge. Swimming is permitted on the small public beach at the south shore near Via Spiaggia del Lago — the water is clean, cool and dramatically deep.
