Cisterne Romane di Albano

Directly beneath the main Piazza Mazzini, a vast network of Roman cisterns built to supply the Legio II Parthica fortress sits almost entirely unknown to visitors — and even to many Romans. These barrel-vaulted chambers, dating to around 200 AD, are among the best-preserved Roman hydraulic structures in central Italy and feel genuinely other-worldly when you step inside.

Inside the Cisterns

The complex consists of five parallel barrel-vaulted galleries, each roughly 30 metres long and 5 metres high, constructed in opus reticulatum — the distinctive diamond-pattern Roman brickwork — and still bearing traces of the waterproof hydraulic plaster that lined the walls 1,800 years ago. The temperature inside hovers around 14°C year-round, making it a welcome refuge in July.

Lighting is minimal and deliberately so: the municipality has installed low amber lamps that cast long shadows across the vaulted ceilings, giving the space a cathedral-like gravity. Bring a small torch if you want to examine the construction details up close, particularly the original Roman drainage channels cut into the floor.

Getting In and Context

Access is through a discreet iron door on Via Anfiteatro, managed by the local archaeological association. Visits are guided only and run on weekend mornings at 10 am and 11:30 am; weekday visits can be arranged by calling the Comune di Albano's cultural office at least 48 hours in advance.

The cisterns held an estimated 10,000 cubic metres of water, fed by an aqueduct branch of the Aqua Alexandrina. Pairing a visit here with the nearby Anfiteatro Romano and the Porta Pretoria — the monumental gateway to the Castra Albana, still standing on Via Alcide De Gasperi — creates a coherent half-day Roman military archaeology walk that few guidebooks have yet discovered.
