The Beach Itself
Whitehaven Beach stretches seven kilometres along Whitsunday Island, and its sand is 98% pure silica — so fine and reflective it squeaks underfoot and stays cool even in full sun. The water shifts from pale mint in the shallows to deep cobalt further out, and the beach remains free of development, kept pristine inside the Whitsunday Islands National Park.
Most day tours land at both the northern and southern ends of the beach, giving you time to swim, paddle-board, and simply walk the shoreline in near-silence. Arrive early on the water for the best light and the calmest crowds.
Hill Inlet Lookout
A short guided walk through eucalypt and rainforest brings you to the Hill Inlet Lookout, where the view below changes with every tide — the swirling sands create a different abstract painting each hour of the day. This natural phenomenon is why no two photographs of Hill Inlet look quite alike, and why the lookout is widely regarded as one of the most striking coastal vistas in Australia.
Tours depart from Airlie Beach's Coral Sea Marina and typically combine the lookout hike with two reef snorkelling stops, where you can spot turtles, reef fish, and — between June and September — migrating humpback whales passing through the Whitsunday passage.

Many operators include snorkelling at fringing reefs around Hook Island — sheltered sites such as Mantaray Bay and Maureens Cove are chosen for conditions on the day and are known for coral formations, colourful reef fish, and regular turtle sightings.
