Why the Lagoon Exists (and Why It Matters)
The tropical waters around Airlie Beach are home to box jellyfish and Irukandji during the Australian summer (November to April), making ocean swimming genuinely dangerous without a stinger suit. The lagoon solves this elegantly: a large, stinger-free pool complex open year-round, with a separate toddler wading pool, a children's shallow pool, and a main pool up to two metres deep with dedicated lap lanes.
Lifeguards patrol throughout the day, the water is kept clean and clear, and the surrounding parkland is landscaped with shade trees, BBQ facilities, covered picnic tables, and a children's playground — making this a full half-day destination rather than just a quick dip.

What elevates the lagoon above a standard public pool is its position: built on a raised breakwater, it offers uninterrupted views across the Coral Sea toward the Whitsunday Islands from the water itself. The lagoon is surrounded by grassy sunbathing lawns and is a two-minute walk from Airlie Beach's main strip of cafés and restaurants — Gelatissimo for post-swim gelato is a well-worn local ritual. Practical Tips
The lagoon is free to use every day of the year, with opening hours that vary slightly by season. It is popular with locals and travellers alike, and gets busiest on weekend afternoons — early mornings offer a quieter, more serene swim with better light for photos.
Shingley Beach, a short stroll along the Jubilee Boardwalk from the lagoon, offers a quieter grassy foreshore with BBQ areas if you want a more low-key spot away from the main lagoon crowds.
