Lions Airlie Beach Community Markets
Every Saturday morning the Airlie Beach esplanade transforms into a buzzing open-air market where locals and travellers mingle under coconut palms with the Coral Sea glittering just metres away. It is the most authentic slice of Whitsundays community life you can experience without getting on a boat.
What to Expect at the Stalls
Run by the Whitsunday Lions Club, the markets stretch along the foreshore walkway from 7 am to 1 pm and pack in an eclectic mix of fresh local produce, handmade crafts, tropical clothing, art, jewellery, candles, soaps, and an ever-rotating cast of food vendors serving everything from cooked meats and ethnic dishes to freshly baked goods and desserts.
Some stallholders have been trading here for over 20 years, giving the market a genuine neighbourhood feel rather than a tourist-trap vibe. Look out for locally made essential oils, hand-printed silk sarongs, and reef-inspired jewellery — all far more interesting than airport souvenirs.
Coffee, Camel Rides & Live Music
Mr Bean Cold Brew Coffee — which started life as a stall right here at these markets — is the locals' caffeine ritual of choice: a concentrate brewed for over 20 hours in ultra-filtered water that serious coffee drinkers will immediately notice. Grab a cup and stake out a patch of grass facing the Coral Sea before the crowds build.
Live music from local bands sets a relaxed tropical tempo, and children can enjoy camel rides along the beach — a surprisingly memorable detail that makes the markets genuinely fun for families. The markets also open on extra days when cruise ships dock in town, so check the schedule if you are visiting mid-week.
After the Markets
The market site sits right next to the Airlie Beach Lagoon and the start of the Bicentennial Walkway, so a post-market swim or a stroll along the esplanade is the obvious next move. The main strip of cafés and restaurants is a two-minute walk away for a lazy brunch once the stalls wind down.
Arrive early — free parking near the foreshore fills fast on Saturday mornings, and the best produce and baked goods sell out before 9 am.
