Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods)
Few hikes on earth deliver this combination of mythic backstory and jaw-dropping scenery: a clifftop trail that strings together terraced vineyards, rugged Lattari limestone and uninterrupted views of Capri and the shimmering Tyrrhenian Sea. Starting from Piazza Paolo Capasso in Bomerano, it is the single most exhilarating reason to base yourself in Agerola rather than the crowded coast below.
The Route
The official trail runs from the hamlet of Bomerano in Agerola municipality to Nocelle, a village perched above Positano, covering roughly 7.8 km with gentle, mostly downhill terrain. Along the way key landmarks include the Grotta del Biscotto, cliffside ruins, ancient terraced stone walls, and panoramic viewpoints overlooking Capri, the Li Galli islets, and Punta Penna.
At a mid-trail fork the path splits into an upper and lower route — take the upper on the way out for the widest coastal panoramas, then return via the lower through denser Mediterranean woodland for a satisfying circular day.
Legend & Atmosphere
The trail's name comes from an ancient myth: the gods themselves are said to have walked this ridge to rescue Ulysses from the sirens lurking off the coast of Positano, and the name has stuck for good reason.
Vegetation shifts dramatically as you walk — open hillsides with grazing animals give way to fragrant maquis scrub, wild fennel and the occasional lemon tree clinging to a terrace, all while the sea glitters hundreds of metres below.
Practical Wisdom
Start before 8 am to have the trail nearly to yourself and catch the best golden-hour light for photos. The trail is not paved and has unrailed clifftop stretches, so wear proper hiking shoes and carry at least two litres of water.
From Nocelle you can descend roughly 1,500 steps to Positano, catch a local bus, or take a ferry onward to Amalfi, Sorrento or Salerno — making a one-way traverse with a scenic boat return the perfect full-day loop.
