Taravao Plateau & Vaihi Waterfall Walk
The Taravao Plateau is Tahiti Iti's cool, green secret — a world of open farmland, mist-draped ridges, and hidden waterfalls that feels a hemisphere away from the beach resorts. Combine a wander through the plateau with a short trail to the Vaihi Waterfall on the Faaone coast for a morning that covers every shade of tropical green.
The Plateau: Tahiti's Unexpected Highland
Rising several hundred metres above the coast, the Taravao Plateau is Tahiti Iti's lush agricultural heartland — a patchwork of pastures where cattle and horses roam freely against a backdrop of volcanic peaks and the distant shimmer of the lagoon. The temperature drops noticeably as you climb, making it a welcome escape from coastal humidity.
The plateau is also the starting point for hikes deeper into the interior of Tahiti Iti, including trails that lead to ridge-top viewpoints only accessible on foot. Even a short walk along the farm tracks rewards you with views that no road can match.
Vaihi Waterfall: A Quick Detour Worth Every Step
On the east coast of Tahiti Nui at Faaone, just a short drive from the isthmus, the Vaihi Waterfall tumbles into a cool pool fringed by giant ferns and heliconia. You can park roadside and reach the falls in a gentle 10-minute walk through dense tropical forest — no guide required.
The pool at the base is deep enough for a swim and cold enough to feel genuinely refreshing after the coastal heat. Go early to have the place to yourself; by mid-morning tour groups begin to arrive.
Humpback Whales: A Bonus from August
From August through November, humpback whales migrate from Antarctic waters to the warmer seas around Tahiti Iti to mate and give birth. Boat tours departing from Taravao and Teahupo'o offer whale-watching excursions that are often combined with snorkelling stops on the reef.
Spotting a humpback breach against the backdrop of Tahiti Iti's green cliffs is one of those travel moments that simply cannot be planned — only stumbled upon with good timing and a willing local guide.
