Restaurant Terre-Mer, Phaeton Bay

Sitting right on the edge of Phaeton Bay on the south shore of the isthmus, Terre-Mer earns its name — 'Land and Sea' — by marrying the freshest local fish and seafood with classic French technique and a terrace that puts the lagoon practically in your lap. It is the kind of meal you will be talking about long after you leave Tahiti.

The Menu: Local Ingredients, French Soul

The kitchen leans on the day's catch from the surrounding lagoon and the produce of the Taravao plateau, turning them into dishes that feel both rooted in place and polished in execution. Think mahi-mahi with vanilla beurre blanc, fresh tuna tartare with coconut milk, and grilled prawns with a Tahitian lime dressing.

The French culinary backbone means sauces are taken seriously and presentation is careful — this is not a beach shack but a proper restaurant that happens to be in one of the most beautiful settings imaginable.

The Setting

The terrace faces directly onto Phaeton Bay, a sheltered inlet on the southern side of the Taravao isthmus where the water is calm, clear, and ringed by green hills. Lunch here on a sunny day, with a glass of chilled white wine and the lagoon glittering before you, is an unambiguously perfect moment.

The atmosphere is relaxed and unhurried — this is Tahiti Iti, not Papeete — and the staff are warm and welcoming to visitors exploring the peninsula.

When and How to Visit

Terre-Mer is open for lunch from Sunday through Saturday (check current hours on arrival as peninsula restaurants can adjust seasonally), and reservations are advisable at weekends when tables on the terrace fill up fast.

It sits on the south-coast road out of Taravao towards Teahupo'o, making it a natural lunch stop on a peninsula day-trip — eat well here before continuing to PK 0 for the taxi-boat to the wave.
