Crafts With a Story
The market is known for traditional Polynesian crafts — hand-woven baskets, carved wooden tikis, and garments sewn from printed pareo fabric. The artisans here are proud of their work and often explain the cultural meaning behind each piece, turning a quick browse into an impromptu lesson in Polynesian heritage.
Prices are lower than in Papeete and the atmosphere is far more intimate; you are buying directly from the maker rather than a middleman, which makes every purchase feel personal.
Fresh Produce From the Peninsula
The food stalls overflow with produce grown on the Taravao plateau and the surrounding valleys — papayas, breadfruit, taro, mountain plantains, and, in season, lychees and rambutans. Grab a fresh coconut or a paper bag of passion fruit for the road.

The market is busiest on Saturday and Sunday mornings — arrive before 8 a.m. to catch the full spread before the best produce sells out. Weekday mornings are quieter but still worth a visit.
Taravao town itself is the commercial hub of Tahiti Iti, so you can combine the market with a stop at a local snack bar or a drive up to the Belvédère for a full morning itinerary.
