Villa Mazzini
On Corso Cavour, where the old Piano di San Giovanni square once held its ground, a small public garden now occupies 2.8 acres of central Messina. Paths cut between flower beds and benches under secular trees, a pond holds fish, an aviary keeps canaries and parrots, and a modest concert stage sits above an artificial grotto with goldfish and turtles threading the water below.
This is Villa Mazzini — originally called La Flora — and it remains the first green space Messina ever carved out of its city centre. In front of the garden, the Historical Aquarium presents some sixty Mediterranean species in 22 tanks fed with seawater drawn directly from the Straits.

People who stop here mid-tour tend to linger at the grotto basin longer than they expect. The busts of Giuseppe Mazzini and Francesco Maurolico appear quietly along the paths — easy to walk past, worth pausing at. Check the aquarium's opening status before you factor it into your afternoon; it closes more often than the signage suggests.
The story behind Villa Mazzini
The garden was laid out in the first half of the 19th century on ground that had once served as an ancient Roman necropolis — a detail the manicured flower beds give no hint of today. It opened under the name La Flora, an Italian-style public garden at a time when Messina had no other green space at its centre.
After the death of the Italian patriot and republican thinker Giuseppe Mazzini, the garden was renamed in his honour. The connection to Messina was direct: Mazzini had been elected as a deputy for the city in the general elections of 1866. Busts of both Mazzini and the Messina-born mathematician and astronomer Francesco Maurolico were placed along its paths, where they remain.
Good to know
The villa is free and open daily from 8:00 to 21:00. It sits on Corso Cavour, a short walk from the Cathedral and Fontana di Orione. Allow thirty minutes for the garden itself. The aquarium is frequently closed — treat it as a bonus if you find it open, not a given.
Spring and early autumn are the most comfortable seasons — temperatures sit between 19 and 25°C and the garden is at its best. July and August turn hot and occasionally sultry, with highs above 30°C; the shade here is thin, so mornings work better than afternoons in high summer. Winter is mild and rarely wet enough to close the paths.

Not the most beautiful park, but fun for kids and a nice stop close to the cruise port. Has an overcrowded turtle and koi pond which we found interesting.
A small park in the city center. Don't forget to say hello to the local turtles!
Historical Villa in Messina. It’s basically a small public garden. In the past you could find the local aquarium and some cages with monkeys and birds. Nowadays is a nice small place where to take a stroll with your kids. Here they can find some amenities and games, like trampolines, mazes, carousels and swings.
A nice public space where children can play and run around safely. It's disappointing that there is not more free play equipment as mostly there are vendors who charge a small fee for children to play. The train and turtle pond are probably the best things.
