Torre di Vietri
The Torre Vito Bianchi stands at the edge of Marina di Vietri with the quiet authority of something that has outlasted its original purpose. Built in 1564 as a watchtower against pirate raids along the Tyrrhenian coast, it now serves the Guardia di Finanza — Italy's financial police — which means you read it from the outside, as most old towers prefer to be read.
What strikes you is how far the sea has retreated. A catastrophic flood in 1954 pushed the coastline forward, and the tower that once stood guard over the water now finds itself stranded inland by its own geology, a reminder that the coast here is always in negotiation with itself.

People who come back tend to time a walk past the tower in the early morning, before the waterfront fills up. The light on the stonework is different then, and you get a cleaner look at the five gun ports — the troniere — without anyone standing in front of them. From this angle you can also pick out the two factory chimneys known as I Due Fratelli rising in the middle distance.
The story behind Torre di Vietri
The tower was raised in 1564 during the Viceregal period, when the Kingdom of Naples — then under Spanish rule — was systematically fortifying its coastline against Ottoman and Barbary pirate incursions. Five troniere, or gun ports, were worked into its walls, making it a structure of active defense rather than mere lookout.
In 1569, a second, smaller tower was added at Marina d'Albori to extend the chain of coastal surveillance; that one has since been absorbed into a private residence. Torre Vito Bianchi survived intact, passed into institutional use, and remains a Viceregal-era structure in daily operation — which, along the Amalfi Coast, is its own kind of continuity.

The tower is not open to the public — it's a working government building. View it from the Marina di Vietri waterfront; the walk from central Vietri sul Mare takes around ten minutes on foot. Vietri is directly accessible from Salerno by car or bus, and the train station sits just a short walk from the seafront.
Summer — June through September — brings dry heat and sea temperatures that peak around 26°C in August, making the surrounding Marina comfortable for an unhurried visit. Winter is mild but noticeably wetter, with November and January seeing the heaviest rainfall; the tower itself reads well in grey light, but the waterfront is quieter and some nearby businesses close seasonally.

Amazing day at the seaside, the facility looks super clean and well kept. Food is a bit overpriced ( my mixed grilled fish plate was around €25), especially for the portion size. Staff was quite amiable. Clear water and enough space for all the clients!
