Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista
The dome of San Giovanni Battista announces itself from a distance — a round cap of green, yellow, and blue majolica tiles that picks up the same ceramic vocabulary you'll find in the shop windows below. The church sits at the highest point of Vietri sul Mare's historic center, and climbing to it means threading through alleyways where painted tiles are set into walls like punctuation.
Look at the facade before you go inside. The oculus above the portal was a rose window until the war damaged it; in 1946 a ceramic panel of the Baptist himself took its place, with the Vietri skyline laid out behind him like a local's calling card.

People who return tend to linger in front of the 16th-century Madonna del Latte — a nursing Madonna on gold ground flanked by St. John and St. Andrew — longer than they expect to. The 1732 coffered ceiling, gilded and geometric, is easier to read once your eyes adjust. Go on June 21 or August 29 if you can: the reliquary bust of the Baptist comes out for procession.
The story behind Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista
A man named Jennace, from Atrani, founded the original church on this site in the late tenth century. By 1036 it was recorded as San Giovanni de Staffilo, and by the fourteenth century it had become the town's parish church. The current building took shape in the seventeenth century: architect Matteo Vitale, brought in from Cava de' Tirreni, redesigned the facade in 1617, and the dome over the transept crossing went up in the same early decades of that century.
The interior accumulated its character across two hundred years. In 1657 a polychrome marble altar was donated; in 1732 the nave received its gold coffered ceiling, and Vietri painter Pietro De Rosa completed the altarpiece — Virgin with St. John and St. Irene — that same year. The majolica tile cladding on the dome followed in 1902, folding the church into the town's long identity as a centre of ceramic craft.

The church is free to enter; a donation box sits near the door. The nearest train station is under a kilometre away — eight minutes from Salerno by regional Trenitalia. The SITA bus running the Amalfi–Salerno route stops in Vietri. Specific opening hours aren't posted reliably online, so plan a flexible morning visit.

We went here in December, right on the feast of the Immaculate Conception. This church is very beautiful, very peaceful, the design is baroque. And since it's Christmas, we also saw the Nativity scene they put up, where you can also see a miniature of the church. It's really worth the visit.
Probably the only truly authentic sight in Vietri sul Mare (besides the many ceramic shops). The church stands out with its distinctive exterior, especially the colorful tiled dome that reflects the town’s pottery tradition. Inside, it’s also worth a visit, with a peaceful atmosphere and classic baroque decorations. The church dates back to the 17th century and has long been the religious heart of Vietri. Its architecture and decoration reflect the influence of Naples’ baroque style, while the dome has become an unmistakable landmark of the Amalfi Coast. A genuine highlight in a town otherwise dominated by shops – definitely worth a short visit.
Nestled within the small walkways of Vietri, we stumbled upon this beautiful Church on Aug 2025. Such a beautiful and immaculate church. A must see to say a prayer of thanks and protection.
