Torre Clavel
From the water, Torre Clavel reads as a vertical stack of pale stone growing straight out of the rock above Fornillo Beach — four levels, pentagonal, with a balcony wrapping three sides and a tiled terrace that seems to hover over the sea. It is not a ruin repurposed as a photo opportunity. It is a working building with a specific history: a medieval coastal watchtower that became, in the early twentieth century, the obsessively personal home of a Swiss polymath who bought it for 600 lire and spent years making it entirely his own.
Today the tower operates as a private rental villa, which means most visitors see it from below, from the pebbled shore or from a passing boat. That partial view is itself worth seeking out.

The entrance — roughly 65 steps from the gate, then 37 more down to the beach — sets the pace for the whole property. The five-minute water taxi from the main beach is the approach worth taking at least once.
The story behind Torre Clavel
The tower's origins are disputed across sources — some place the first Norman fortification in the thirteenth century, others date the structure to the fifteenth — but its purpose was consistent: to watch the coast for Saracen raids. It was demobilised in 1758, sold in 1817, and then, in 1909, purchased by Gilbert Clavel, a Swiss architect, archaeologist and Egyptologist who had come to the Amalfi Coast on his doctor's advice to ease lifelong lung problems.
Clavel restored the tower and made it his home, designing and crafting much of the interior himself with collaborator Enrico Lietz. He entertained Cocteau, the Futurist painter Fortunato Depero, and Pablo Picasso, who is said to have met his future wife Olga Khokhlova here. Clavel also gathered his circle at a local fishermen's bar that would eventually become the restaurant La Buca di Bacco.
Good to know
The tower is a private rental villa; non-guests experience it from Fornillo Beach or by water taxi past the promontory. Access is by boat (five minutes from the main beach) or a fifteen-minute footpath — no road reaches it. Numerous staircases make it unsuitable for anyone unsteady on their feet. May through October offers the most comfortable conditions.
May through October is the window when the coast is at its most liveable, with temperatures between 21°C and 28°C and very little rain from June through August. September and the first half of October carry the warmth of summer without the peak-season crowds; November through April brings low cloud and rain, and the sea reaches its coldest in February.
