Teatro Accademia di Conegliano
Two stone sphinxes flank the staircase that climbs to Teatro Accademia's neoclassical façade on Piazza Cima, and they've been watching Conegliano arrive for an evening out since 1869. The portico at the centre draws you in before you've bought a ticket — a covered threshold between the square and the 803-seat hall beyond, with its stalls, gallery, and loggia still intact.
The theatre opened on 5 September 1869 with Rossini's *Il Conte Ory*, and the repertoire that followed — Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi, then Mascagni and Puccini as the century turned — traces the arc of Italian opera as precisely as any conservatory timeline.

The story behind Teatro Accademia di Conegliano
In 1845, a group of local nobles and box-holders from the old Teatro Concordia formed the Società dei Palchettisti with the intention of building a proper new theatre. The first commission went to an architect named Segusini from Belluno; his plans were eventually set aside in favour of a design by Andrea Scala of Udine, whose scheme offered a more rational use of space and came in at lower cost. Construction proceeded under Austrian rule and the building was complete by 1868.
The name Teatro dell'Accademia was chosen in tribute to the Accademia degli Aspiranti, a cultural society that had occupied the adjacent Palazzo Sbarra. By 1897 the hall had hosted its first cinematographic projection; regular film screenings followed from 1946, layering a second life onto the 19th-century frame.

The theatre sits in Conegliano's ZTL zone; park along Viale Carducci (paid, until 20:00) and walk up. Tickets are available via Vivaticket from October, or in person at Jungle Records on Viale Matteotti. FAI members get a reduced rate at the box office. No entry once the performance begins, and leave the umbrella at the stand by the door.

Beautiful building
The Accademia Theater is one of Conegliano's beautiful monuments. Located right at the top and visible from the train station, it welcomes you to the city. With its neoclassical architecture, it features a façade with stone sphinxes and hosts the theater season and other film programs. The Siena Ballet's performances are fantastic. The interior is beautiful, starting with the elegant foyer. The large outdoor space reenacts the Renaissance battle between the people of Conegliano and Treviso, performed by the Dama Castellana Association. This summer, participants wear period costumes.
