Duomo di Conegliano (Cathedral of San Leonardo)
At number 44 on Via XX Settembre, the Duomo di Conegliano rises where a pilgrims' hospice once stood — its long nave carrying the bones of a 14th-century church beneath later coats of stucco and rounded arches. The building holds two distinct eras at once: the medieval naves with their candelabra detailing and the more formal modern presbytery grafted on in the 18th century.
What stops most people is Cima da Conegliano's 1493 altarpiece in the presbytery — the Madonna with Child surrounded by six saints, painted by the town's own master before Venice claimed him. It rewards a slow look.

People who come back tend to time their visit for a weekday morning, when the light through the nave is clearest and the building is quiet. If you can, check whether the Sala dei Battuti upstairs is open — the adjacent 14th-century meeting room is kept on separate weekend hours and easily missed on a first pass.
The story behind Duomo di Conegliano (Cathedral of San Leonardo)
The Battuti — a congregation of lay penitents originating in Umbria around 1260 — arrived in Conegliano and built a church here dedicated to S. Maria Nuova dei Battuti, completed by 1354 at the centre of a hospice they ran for pilgrims and the sick. In the second half of the same century they added a meeting room above, positioned perpendicular to the nave so it looked out over the porticoed street below.
Centuries later, in the 18th century, the building was reshaped to suit contemporary tastes: the pointed Gothic arches were replaced with round ones, stucco was applied throughout, and the church was elevated to cathedral status under the joint dedication to S. Maria Annunziata and S. Leonardo.

Walk 1.5 km straight up Via XX Settembre from Conegliano station — the Duomo is on your left. Open daily 8:00–12:00 and 15:00–19:00, free entry. The Sala dei Battuti opens Saturday and Sunday only; groups of 20+ can book other times via salabattuti.conegliano@gmail.com with a week's notice.
