The open-air stage at Villa Rufolo sits on a belvedere roughly 350 metres above the Tyrrhenian Sea, and when the Berliner Philharmoniker plays there on a July night, the sound goes straight out over the water with nowhere else to go. This is the Ravello Festival — a summer concert series that has been running since 1953 and draws orchestras and soloists of the first rank to a medieval terrace that seats around 1,200 people.
Concerts begin at 21:00, by which point the worst of the heat has lifted and the terrace cools to something between 18 and 21°C. The Auditorium Oscar Niemeyer and smaller venues — Piazza Duomo, San Giovanni del Toro, Sala dei Cavalieri — carry the programme when Villa Rufolo is dark.

The festival was born in 1953 out of a specific idea: Richard Wagner had visited Ravello in 1880, and local administrator Paolo Caruso, backed by Girolamo Bottiglieri of the Provincial Tourist Board, saw the 70th anniversary of Wagner's death as the moment to establish the town as a City of Music. The inaugural concerts — titled 'Wagnerian concerts in Klingsor Garden' — were performed by the Orchestra of Teatro di San Carlo di Napoli under conductors Hermann Scherchen and William Steinberg.
For decades the festival ran on civic energy and borrowed infrastructure. In 2002 the Fondazione Ravello was formally established on 11 June as a public-private body under the Campania Region and the Municipality of Ravello, giving it the institutional footing to attract the calibre of artists — Riccardo Muti, Daniel Barenboim, Lang Lang, the Berliner Philharmoniker — who appear today.

No train reaches Ravello — take a Freccia to Salerno, then a SITA bus to Amalfi and a connecting bus up the hill. The box office on Piazza Duomo opens 1 July. Skip the terraces between noon and 15:00 in July and August; temperatures regularly clear 35°C. Evening gates open 45–60 minutes before the 21:00 start.
July and August evenings are the sweet spot: daytime heat fades by concert time, and the Villa Rufolo terrace sits at a comfortable 18–21°C after dark, though a sea breeze can make it feel cooler. September remains warm at 18–23°C and catches the final weeks of the programme.

The drive up to Ravello is lovely, home in the dark was a challenge. Recommend staying over night. Concert this time in the castle - completely charming. Next time we will go to the Belvedere.
Concerts by the Society. Nowhere on the flyers does it tell you that you need tickets. €27.50 each, we passed and walked into a military wedding with fireworks on the side of the mountain. Fate wins again.
