Ravello Cathedral (Duomo di Ravello)
The floor of Ravello's cathedral tilts almost imperceptibly toward Piazza Vescovado — a 12th-century trick of perspective that draws your eye forward the moment you step inside. It's the kind of detail that rewards attention, and this building has several more. The bronze doors alone, designed by Barisano da Trani in 1179 and cast in Constantinople, account for three of the fewer than two dozen such doors still standing in Italy.
Inside, two pulpits face each other across the central nave. The earlier one, from 1130, shows Jonah mid-swallow in vivid mosaic. The later, from 1272, rests on six spiral columns supported by marble lions — a commission by the merchant Nicola Rufolo, whose family shaped much of medieval Ravello.

The marble bust down there — believed by many to depict Sigilgaida Rufolo, though others argue otherwise — sits quietly in the dim light and rewards a second look. The Via Richard Wagner entrance, on the side of the building, is easy to miss the first time.
The story behind Ravello Cathedral (Duomo di Ravello)
Ravello Cathedral was founded in 1086 by Orso Papiro, the town's first bishop, and completed within a year. The structure was rebuilt in the 12th century and again in the 17th, with the facade reworked in the 16th and restored to its current white appearance in 1931. The bronze doors were commissioned in 1179 by the nobleman Sergio Muscettola and designed by Barisano da Trani, the castings made in Constantinople.
A century later, the merchant Nicola Rufolo paid for the Gospel Pulpit, completed in 1272 by the sculptor Niccolò di Bartolomeo da Foggia. The 13th-century bell tower shows clear Arab and Byzantine influence — a reminder of the trading networks that once ran through this coast. The crypt museum, opened in 1983, holds the accumulation of those centuries in a single underground room.

Cathedral entry is free; the crypt museum costs €2. Both are open daily 9am–noon and 5:30–7pm, though hours may shift in winter. Bring cash for the museum. The bell tower and Chapel of St. Pantaleone are worth the few extra minutes inside.

A beautiful square in front of the church. There are some cafes and restaurants.
The Duomo of Saint Mary is a decent cathedral, but it definitely fell short of my expectations. The cathedral area was pretty large and had some unique character. However, the walls were mostly white with little artwork. There was also a museum with old empty sarcophaguses, church artifacts, and sculptures dating back to the 13th century. It was a good experience, but it didn’t blow me away. If you’re in the area, I would recommend going to the nearby Amalfi Cathedral instead. It’s the same price (4 euros) and it blows this cathedral away in size and ornateness.

Nice for a quick trip from Amalfi via bus. The square has some good cafes. Lovely views and relaxing atmosphere.
I really enjoyed this church. It is not overly decorated and is in fact quite austere. There are two beautiful pulpits covered with mosaics with Arabic influence. The bronze church door is also spectacular. The museum of the church has some beautiful objects.
