Porta della Truglia
Atrani is one of the smallest towns on the Amalfi Coast, and its medieval fabric is so compressed that its old gates and passageways are easy to walk through without registering what you've crossed. Porta della Truglia is one of those thresholds — a remnant of the fortified perimeter that once enclosed this cliff-hugging settlement, the kind of stone arch that marks where the town decided it ended and the world outside began.
No single documented account pins down its construction date or the hand that built it, which is itself a kind of truth about Atrani: much of what shaped this place was built for survival, not for the historical record.

The story behind Porta della Truglia
Atrani's medieval defenses grew out of its years as a dependency of the Maritime Republic of Amalfi, when coastal towns along this stretch needed walls as much as they needed harbors. The village was protected by substantial fortifications, including a castle on the promontory where the Chiesa di Santa Maria Maddalena now stands, and a separate stronghold in the Civita area known as the Castle of Supramonte — destroyed during Pisan raids between 1135 and 1137.
By the 1500s, the threat had shifted from rival Italian city-states to Ottoman naval raids, and a coastal tower was constructed in that period to shore up the town's defenses. Porta della Truglia sits within this longer story of a settlement that repeatedly rebuilt itself around the question of how to stay safe on an exposed coastline.
Good to know
Atrani is a 15-minute walk from Amalfi along the coast path, or a short SITA bus ride for around €1.50. The town is almost entirely pedestrian. April through June and September through October give you the best conditions — August is crowded and hot.
Spring and early autumn are the most comfortable seasons — April through June brings mild temperatures and longer light, while September and October tend to be warm without the August crush. Summer heat can make the stone streets feel airless by midday.

Personally I found nice its unusual shape that has several reasons and fantastic it's location. The tower was built in 1532 but then destroyed 3 times during wars. The current building dates back to eighteenth century. Since July 2023 the property has been transferred from a national agency to the municipality of Sperlonga. They plan to use for temporary exhibition, place for weddings and more. I didn't check if it was open, the parking fee €3 per hour or €20 per day was an invitation for me to dedicate little time to visiting the village and perhaps is the same for other people. I was here at the end of the summer season and you could breathe the air of the end of the season with the presence of few tourists. At the same time, other similar places with friendlier prices were teeming with foreign tourists.
Good option for beach near Rome. I discovered asking for a local person. Easy to reach (train + bus) and a good beach. No waves but good water and nice village. TIP: You can’t be without shirt in the village! You can be charged!
Amazing tower and the most beautiful view. I was very super of how accessible it was to get and genuinely beautiful.
Sperlonga is a very cute city... BUT parking there is crazy ! There is no free of charge parking lot! YOU MUST pay in every single piece of this little city! THAT ASIDE walking through the borgo is amazing, reach Torre Truglia from where you can have unique view , really fascinating !
