Ponte dei Cappuccini
Ponte dei Cappuccini spans the Santa Domenica valley on two tiers of full-round masonry arches — four below, ten above — and the geometry of it stops you mid-crossing. You look down into a deep cut of greenery and ancient stone, and the city noise drops away almost completely.
This is Ragusa's oldest bridge, linking the San Giovanni district on one side to the Cappuccini district on the other. Cars crossed it until the 1980s. Now it belongs to anyone on foot, and that change has given it a quieter, more considered life.

People who come back tend to time it for late afternoon, when the light angles low across the valley and the stone of the arches goes warm. The bridge is short enough to cross twice without thinking about it — and the second crossing, looking the other way, is always different.
The story behind Ponte dei Cappuccini
A Cappuccini friar, Padre Gianbattista Occhipinti Scopetta, pushed for the bridge's construction — and died in 1836, a year before work began. Construction ran from 1837 to 1843, and the completed crossing made it possible for the city to expand southward across a valley that had previously been a real obstacle.
For well over a century it carried motor traffic. In the 1980s vehicles were banned, and in 1992 the Superintendency of Cultural Heritage restored and repaved it in local stone. The bridge now connects the Cathedral of San Giovanni on one approach to the Church and Convent of the Cappuccini on the other — the same religious geography it was built to serve.
Good to know
No entrance fee; the bridge is pedestrian-only and freely accessible. The nearest bus stop is Ragusa Terminal - Nodo Zama, about a minute's walk. Spring (mid-April to mid-May) and early autumn are the most comfortable seasons. Summer afternoons get genuinely hot.
Mid-April to mid-May and mid-September to mid-October are the most comfortable windows — warm but not punishing. July and August bring daily highs well into the mid-to-upper twenties Celsius; the valley below holds heat, and midday on the exposed deck is not the moment to linger.
