Passeggiata Morin
The Passeggiata Morin follows the waterfront in a straight, unhurried line — palms on both sides, benches angled toward the sea, the Apuan Alps rising white in the distance beyond the port cranes. It is La Spezia's civic living room, the place where the city comes to walk slowly and be seen doing it.
At the Piazza Europa end, Adalberto Libera's Cathedral of Cristo Re anchors the skyline — designed in 1956, inaugurated only in 1975, its presence more monumental than devotional. At the other end, the Thaon di Revel pedestrian bridge, opened in 2013, arcs out toward the Mirabello marina, giving the promenade a logical destination without quite demanding you reach it.

Return visitors tend to time their walk for the 7–9 PM passeggio window, when the promenade fills with locals who have clearly dressed for the occasion. The red lighthouse at the end of Molo Italia draws fishermen and families in equal measure. Go on a weekday if you want the benches to yourself; weekends belong to the city.
The story behind Passeggiata Morin
The promenade takes its name from Enrico Costantino Morin, born in Genova in 1841, who graduated from the city's naval school on 7 November 1852 and went on to command the ship Garibaldi on a world voyage between 1879 and 1882 — passing through the Suez Canal during the Orabī Pascià revolt despite a blockade. He later taught naval tactics, ballistics and naval art at schools in Genova and Turin before his death at Forte dei Marmi on 13 September 1910.
The promenade bearing his name has no confirmed founding date in the record, but its most recent landmark is precise: the Thaon di Revel pedestrian bridge was inaugurated in 2013, connecting the waterfront walk to the marina and giving the whole stretch a cleaner narrative arc.
Good to know
Free and flat, with no gates or hours — come as you are. La Spezia Centrale is a 10–15 minute walk away; parking nearby is genuinely difficult, so leave the car. The full length takes about 45 minutes at a comfortable pace, less if you linger at the bridge end.
Spring and early autumn are the most comfortable seasons for the walk — warm enough for the evening passeggio to feel festive, cool enough that the midday stretch along the open waterfront doesn't tire you. Summer afternoons can be hot and bright with little shade between the palm rows; the promenade comes back to life after 6 PM.
