The roof of Mercato Centrale della Spezia curves like a wave caught mid-break — galvanized steel, aluminum, and glass shaped into two central sails that make the whole structure look as though it might, on a good wind, slip free of Piazza Cavour entirely. Underneath it, every weekday morning from half-seven, the market runs its familiar course: Val di Vara cheeses stacked beside honey from Ameglia, dried mushrooms and truffles brought down from Lunigiana, and fish pulled from the Gulf just beyond the city — mussels, anchovies, sea bream, oysters.
By early afternoon it's over. Vendors pack down, the square empties, and Piazza Cavour returns to pedestrians. The market rewards early risers and punishes the indecisive.

The story behind Mercato Centrale della Spezia
Two Art Nouveau pavilions once stood in Piazza Cavour, built toward the end of the nineteenth century. One was destroyed during the Second World War; the other survived into the late 1960s before being taken down. For decades the square made do with more provisional arrangements.
In 2005, the current roof structure was installed — a design that trades the ornamental language of its predecessors for something more overtly maritime: wave forms in galvanized steel and glass, a semi-open arcade without walls, and a water wall system that moderates light and temperature from within. The architects behind the design are not publicly documented.

You can find all from pasta, cheese, fruit and vegetables to flowers. Just watch out the seagulls, they are always checking an opportunity to steal your fish 🐟
Best place for groceries shopping if you live in La Spezia, or just walk around and grab some fruits, cheese, authentic italian prosciutto at your convenience. Love the vibe and the fact that everybody seems to know each other here.

Great covered market with fresh produce and lots of fish. Broad selection of fish both caught and farmed. Also with species that are rarely found in supermarket fish counters like skate and sea eel. Made me want to rent a holiday apartment nearby and buy a pan.
