Palazzo Thiene
The main entrance on Contrà Porti gives you the first clue that something unusual happened here. The carved Gothic portal, rose marble trifora above it, and the brick façade date to 1490 — one architect's vision. Step around to Stradella S. Gaetano da Thiene and the stonework shifts register entirely: a classical façade bearing the date 1556, its lower storey attributed to Giulio Romano, its upper to Andrea Palladio.
Since 2022 the palazzo has been a civic museum, its rooms holding Antonibon ceramics, Venetian dishes, Remondini prints, and sculptures by Arturo Martini — a collection that accumulated across centuries of private ownership before the City of Vicenza took over in 2021.

The story behind Palazzo Thiene
Lorenzo da Bologna built the original Gothic palace for Lodovico Thiene in 1490, with a portal by Tommaso da Lugano and a triple rose-marble window that still faces Contrà Porti. Half a century later, in October 1542, the Thiene brothers Marcantonio and Adriano commissioned an entirely new scheme — a classical palace intended to fill an entire city block of 54 by 62 metres. Giulio Romano likely drew the first designs; Andrea Palladio revised them during construction from 1544 onward.
The project never reached its ambitions. Adriano Thiene died in France in 1552, and the family's attention moved to Ferrara. Only a portion of the grand plan was realised. The palazzo passed to Lelio Bonin Longare in 1835, later served as headquarters for Banca Popolare di Vicenza, and was folded into the UNESCO "City of Vicenza and the Palladian Villas of the Veneto" World Heritage Site in 1994 — 1996 under the expanded name.
Good to know
The palazzo is a short walk from Vicenza's train station and sits near the pedestrianised Corso Andrea Palladio. It closes entirely in July and August, so plan around that. A Vicenza Gold Card covers entry alongside ten other sites over twelve days. Allow at least ninety minutes.
