Monte Berico Basilica
The climb tells you something before you arrive. From the foot of the hill, 192 steps rise beneath a portico of 150 arches — each arch, the Servite friars will tell you, corresponding to a prayer of the Rosary — and by the time you reach the top, Vicenza has spread itself out below you, with Monte Grappa and the Dolomite foothills visible on a clear day, and the Venetian Lagoon a pale shimmer in the distance.
The basilica at the summit is an accumulation of centuries rather than a single vision. Gothic bones, a nave that Palladio enlarged in 1578, a Baroque shell completed by 1703, a neo-Gothic façade restored from 1860 onward — and, near the gift shop, a wall of metallic votive hearts and photographs of crumpled car wrecks left by people who believe they survived something they shouldn't have.

The story behind Monte Berico Basilica
On March 7, 1426, a peasant woman named Vincenza Pasini reported that the Virgin Mary appeared to her on the hill above Vicenza. A second apparition followed on August 1, 1428. Bishop Pietro Emiliani laid the cornerstone weeks later, on August 25 of that year, and by November 1429 the Bridgettines were holding services in the first small church. The Servite Order took over in 1435 and have remained custodians ever since.
Palladio enlarged the structure with a square nave in 1578 — his last significant contribution before his death — and the full Baroque basilica took shape between 1688 and 1703 under architect Carlo Borella, with sculpture by Orazio Marinali. Giacomo Bragadin, the Republic of Venice's leading figure in the city, had already ordered the grand staircase built in 1595. Pope Pius X elevated the church to a minor basilica in 1904.

Bus Line 18 runs from Viale Roma directly to Monte Berico; it's about 2 km from the train station. Walking up via Viale X Giugno is the more atmospheric approach. Entry to the basilica is free. Avoid arriving during liturgical services, when tourist access is suspended. Free parking sits in the square out front.

Visited towards evening and people and young people gather here for a wonderful view. Free parking and a large viewing platform. The basilica was closed at the time of the visit but the exterior is worth seeing. Beautiful.

This beautiful Basilica is situated very close to the historical center of Vicenza. Situated at the top of a hill over looking the city, the entire complex (Basilica, cloister, terrazza overlooking Vicenza and the surrounding garden, museums and view are worth the trip. Beautiful stonework on the inside and carved statues of martyred saints on the outside make this holy site unique. While outside, take time to enjoy the view of Vicenza from the walkway around the carpark across the street of a walk through the park across the street.
