Palazzo Municipale di Vietri sul Mare

The town hall of Vietri sul Mare announces itself the way most things do here: in ceramic. The exterior carries the decorative tilework that this town has made its signature for centuries, and the council chamber inside continues the logic — walls painted in deep blue and chrome yellow, colours that echo the majesty of the Amalfi palette without borrowing from the sea.

As a working municipal building, the Palazzo Municipale sits at the civic centre of a town that strings itself along a hillside above the Tyrrhenian. Corso Umberto I runs past it, lined with ceramic-fronted shops and the ordinary commerce of a place that hasn't stopped being a real town.

💛 What travellers fall for

People who linger on Corso Umberto I tend to notice the building almost by accident — pausing to look at the tilework on the facade while actually trying to decide where to have lunch. The council chamber frescoes, blue and chrome yellow, are worth a look if the doors happen to be open during a weekday visit.

The story behind Palazzo Municipale di Vietri sul Mare

Vietri sul Mare's identity as a ceramic town long predates any single building, and the Palazzo Municipale reflects that continuity in its decoration rather than in documented architectural history. The council chamber's frescoed walls — blue and chrome yellow, the town's signature palette — suggest a deliberate civic pride in the craft that has driven Vietri's economy and reputation for generations.

Specific construction dates and architects for the building are not currently recorded in available sources. What the palazzo does carry is the accumulated weight of a town that has governed itself from this hillside address while the ceramic tradition evolved around it.

Good to know

Vietri is eight minutes by regional train from Salerno, and SITA SUD buses connect it to Amalfi along the coastal road. As a functioning municipal office, the palazzo keeps administrative hours; weekday mornings give you the best chance of finding the doors open.

A beautiful gem of the Amalfi coast. Vietri sul Mare has 2 main attractions: The seaside and the historic town were you can enjoy a nice walk, great food and the amazing ceramic shop. Vietri sul Mare is indeed a destination for ceramic lovers as it’s ceramic tradition goes back to the 5th century b.c.

Rude behavior from an arrogant man (the bald one on the left of the photo, wearing sunglasses)! Whatever his job is at the Town Hall in Vientri sul Mare is (janitor?) it doesn't give him the right to treat women agressively, without reason. His parents should have taught him manners, now it may be too late.
