Museo Valtellinese di Storia e Arte
On the first floor of Palazzo Sassi de' Lavizzari, a single room stops most visitors cold: the Stüa, an Alpine chamber lined entirely in wood, its ceiling painted with the coats of arms of the Grison families who governed this valley from 1512 to 1797. The museum around it holds six collections — archaeology, sacred art, a coin hoard, the Ligari family's 800-piece fund of paintings and manuscripts, twentieth-century work, and local history — spread through a sixteenth-century palazzo that the city received as a donation in 1922.
The Museo Valtellinese di Storia e Arte is compact enough to cover in a single morning, but the depth of the Ligari holdings alone — Pietro and his painter children Cesare and Vittoria — repays slow looking.

The story behind Museo Valtellinese di Storia e Arte
Late nineteenth-century scholars in the Valtellina began gathering local objects and documents — the kind of accumulation that precedes an institution. That effort was formally constituted in 1947, and on 20 May 1951 the museum opened to the public under its first director, Giovanni Battista Gianoli. A Sacred Art section, sourced from the Diocesan Museum of Como, was added in 1961.
For decades the collections moved between temporary homes. In 1994 they settled into Palazzo Sassi de' Lavizzari, a sixteenth-century building reworked in the eighteenth century and handed to the city for cultural use in 1922. Official museum recognition followed in 2004.

Sondrio railway station (Trenord, Tirano–Lecco line) is a short walk southeast of the palazzo. The museum opens Tuesday through Sunday, 10:00–18:00 with a midday break. A family ticket covers two adults and one child under 14 for €10. Closed 1 January, Easter, 15 August, and 25 December.
