Castello Masegra
From the panoramic terrace at the top of Castello Masegra, Sondrio spreads out below you in a long valley seam — vineyards, rooftops, the silver thread of the Mallero. The castle earned that view over a thousand years, starting as a feudal stronghold for the Capitanei family sometime around 1041 and accumulating towers, loggias, a dovecote, and a frescoed room depicting Orlando Furioso along the way.
Today it houses CAST — Castle of Mountain Stories — a multimedia museum spread across three levels dedicated to rock climbing, alpinism, and the alpine ecosystem. The medieval stonework and the touchscreens coexist more naturally than you might expect.

People who come back tend to linger on the panoramic terrace longer than planned, and to walk up via Via Scarpatetti rather than the direct road — the old rural quarter has stone houses with wooden balconies and small 'pòsa' stones once used to rest heavy loads, details that set the right pace before you reach the gate.
The story behind Castello Masegra
The Capitanei family, the dominant feudal lords of Valtellina, raised the first fortifications here around 1041 — the two medieval towers, northeast and northwest, are what survives of that era. The castle passed to the Beccaria family in the 1430s, and the main entrance portal was completed in 1491, by which point the building had softened into a Renaissance residence with a loggetta and a vaulted, frescoed hall.
When the Graubünden (Grigioni) took control of the valley, the Salis family moved in and added a wider east-side entrance to wheel in wine carts. In 1639, when the Grigioni dismantled Sondrio's other two castles, Masegra was spared precisely because it was a family home. It passed to the Guicciardi family after Valtellina returned to Milan, served as military barracks until the 1980s, and was acquired by the Comune di Sondrio in 2013. The CAST museum opened on 6 October 2019.
Good to know
Open Thursday through Sunday, 10:00–18:00; castle grounds close mid-December and reopen in February. CAST tickets are €7 for adults, €2 for ages 15–25. On foot from the centre it's about 15 minutes. The castle is wheelchair accessible.
Spring and early summer — roughly May through June — offer the clearest light for the terrace views, before valley heat builds in July and August, when temperatures can push past 35°C. Winter visits are possible but December and January bring low cloud and limited daylight as the surrounding mountains shorten the day considerably.
