The museum opens around a 13th-century Franciscan cloister on Piazza Garibaldi, and the architecture does half the work before you've seen a single painting. Rooms built for contemplation turn out to suit art remarkably well.
Inside, you'll find the world's largest collection of works by Jacopo Bassano and his sons — three generations of painters who shaped how the Italian Renaissance handled light and rural life. Alongside them sits an exceptional Canova wing: monochrome drawings on canvas that the museum considers the fullest expression of his draftsmanship, plus sculptures, letters, and books that map a complete artistic mind.

The story behind Museo Civico di Bassano del Grappa
The museum was founded in 1828, with its first public display of paintings installed in 1831 in rooms surrounding the cloister of the former Convento di San Francesco. By 1840, the collection had expanded considerably: paintings moved from the Sala del Consiglio at City Hall joined the holdings, along with natural history specimens and books donated by the naturalist Giovanni Battista Brocchi.
The official museum record marks 1841 as the year it became the city's artistic and cultural anchor — a role it has held since. In 1978, professor Virgilio Chini donated an archaeological collection that broadened the museum's scope further, adding depth to what had begun as a painting gallery into something more like a civic memory.

Open daily 10:00–19:00 except Tuesdays, Christmas Day, New Year's Day, and Easter Sunday; ticket office closes at 18:00. Admission €12 full, €10 reduced. From Bassano del Grappa station, it's a ten-minute walk via Via Jacopo da Ponte to Piazza Garibaldi. Wheelchair access is available via Via Museo 8 with prior notice.

What a brilliant expo of a talented artist Giovanni Segantini. Such wonderful colour, design, texture landscape and the characters in many of his painting scteches so life like. Surprisingly well organized for a small town museum. The exhibits are truly impressive, and the showcases and overall layout are quite new and appropriately adjusted to the existing spaces. The place also hosts temporary exhibitions and important interactive events in the rooms that make up the new extension of the museum.
Loved our visit to the museo civico of bassano. We only had less than an hour but saw beautiful works of art. The staff also are so helpful and kind- they made our experience lovely. We unfortunately visited before the new Segentini exhibit which looks like it’ll be a great show. Wish we could come back and see it!
