Museo Archeologico Ibleo
On the first floor of Palazzo Mediterraneo, a limestone slab stops most visitors cold. The Guerriero di Castiglione — carved from a Sicel necropolis — is not a grand sculpture but a flat, worn relief, the kind of thing that makes you recalibrate how old this corner of Sicily really is.
The Museo Archeologico Ibleo holds six sections that move from prehistoric settlement through Greek colonisation, indigenous Sicel culture, Hellenistic towns, and on into late-Roman and Byzantine life. A reconstructed 4th-century BCE kiln from Scornavacche sits alongside 6th-century CE floor mosaics from the Pirrera site — a sweep of roughly two thousand years in a single room.

People who come back tend to arrive mid-morning on a weekday, when the rooms are quiet enough to read the Italian labels slowly. The exhibit on Camarina rewards patience — the necropolis finds are denser here than anywhere else in the province. Ask at the desk about the locked archaeological zones; access with a guide is worth arranging ahead.
The story behind Museo Archeologico Ibleo
A small Antiquarium occupied this space from 1955 to 1960, gathering the first finds from excavations across the Ragusa territory. The museum formally opened in 1961, housed in Palazzo Mediterraneo — completed in the late 1950s and shaped by architects V. Cabianca, A. Di Vita, and P. Pelagatti.
Through the 1970s, the collection expanded significantly with material from Camarina, the Castiglione necropolis, and Caucana, and the Orsi collections were transferred from Syracuse, anchoring the museum's range across prehistory to the early medieval period. The complex now also encompasses a zona archeologica, Casa Museo Uccello, and Palazzo Cappellani — combined ticket enquiries are worth making at the desk.

Find the museum on Via Natalelli, near the north end of the ponte nuovo in upper Ragusa — a short walk from the duomo along a pedestrian street with elevator access. Hours shift seasonally and differ by source, so confirm before you go. Entry is free on the first Sunday of each month. Budget around 75 minutes.

Free, open during pausa, larger and more interesting than expected. Fantastic local Bronze Age, Greek and Roman artifacts, as well as integrated mosaics and tomb site reconstructions. A short walk from the duomo down a pedestrian street and public elevator.
We enjoyed very much the visit to all three sites: Zona archeologica, Casa museo Uccello, Palazzo Cappellani. But we were unpleasantly surprised by the lack of brochures, as we were given one recycled booklet for 4 of us, written in Italian and French, that had to be returned at the exit of the zona archeologica. There was also no option for purchasing anything in italian or any other language. Anywhere you go in the world, museums offer free small booklets or more extensive ones for purchase. Not at Palazzolo Acreide. We were also surprised by the lack of street signage to guide us to the Casa museo Uccello and to Palazzo Cappellani. Palazzo Cappellani did not even have a visible sign at the door. Palazzo Cappellani, furthermore, would benefit by some form of multi language translation of all the explanatory notes at each artifact. It is an amazing work in progress but it needs some user friendly fine tuning.
Just down the road from hotel a must see,you do however need to arrange for a guide to open up for you as it's locked in general.We were lucky as hotel rang and arranged it for us and Emelio came to translate.
