Loggia del Capitaniato
On Piazza dei Signori, the Loggia del Capitaniato stands unfinished — and that incompleteness is part of what makes it worth stopping for. Palladio designed five or seven bays; what got built in 1571 and 1572 was three, before funds and momentum ran out. The truncated facade faces the Basilica Palladiana across the square like a sentence that ends mid-thought.
The giant Corinthian half-columns rise across those three bays, framing round arches at street level and balconied windows above. The side wall, facing Contrà del Monte, was decorated to commemorate the Battle of Lepanto — a triumphal arch folded into the building's flank, quietly marking a war that was still being fought when the scaffolding went up.

By late afternoon, the square fills and the building does what Palladio intended — it becomes a backdrop for public life, the ground-floor arches framing the coming and going of the city below.
The story behind Loggia del Capitaniato
Palladio drew up the design in 1565, and when the city allocated funds in April 1571, construction moved quickly. He delivered the final moulding templates in March 1572; the roof was on by the end of that year. The building replaced a medieval loggia that had already been rebuilt at least twice — the function was always the same: an open public hall below, an audience chamber above.
Work stopped in 1572 with only three of the planned five or seven bays complete. The stucco and statuary were handled by Lorenzo Rubini; Giovanni Antonio Fasolo painted the interior frescoes. The council chamber inside, the Sala Bernarda, still serves Vicenza's town council today. Since 1994 the loggia has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site covering the city and the Palladian villas of the Veneto.
Good to know
Open daily except Mondays, 9 AM to 6 PM; admission is €5, with reductions for students and seniors. About a kilometre from Vicenza railway station, or a short walk from the Line 10 stop on Piazzetta Largo Neri Pozza. The exterior is the main event — plan 15 to 20 minutes as part of the piazza loop.
Mid-April to mid-June is the quietest and most comfortable window — warm enough to linger on the piazza, cool enough that the stone doesn't radiate heat. Summer brings higher temperatures, occasionally touching 30°C, and more foot traffic across the square.
