Insula Romana (Marsala)
A mosaic dog stares up at you from the ground, the Latin warning "cave canem" still legible beside him after nearly two thousand years. This is Insula Romana, an open-air Roman villa complex at Capo Boeo, the westernmost tip of Sicily, where a tetrastyle atrium, thermal baths, and polychrome floor mosaics lie exposed to the sky — free to enter, walkable at any hour, and sitting atop a site where over ninety percent of what's buried has never been excavated.
The floors are the reason to come. A Medusa head, a large Four Seasons rectangle with personifications at each corner, and that watchful dog outside the bathhouse entrance — these aren't reconstructions but the originals, worn and partial and entirely present.
💛 What travellers fall for
People who've been twice tend to mention the same thing: come at dusk. The site has no shade and midday in July is punishing. Late afternoon light does something to the mosaic colors that photographs don't quite catch. Enter from Piazza della Vittoria near Porta Nuova and walk south along the Plateia Aelia route.
The story behind Insula Romana (Marsala)
The site surfaced by accident in 1939, when construction of sports facilities near Capo Boeo broke ground on what turned out to be a substantial Roman residential complex. The main villa dates to the late 2nd or 3rd century AD — sources differ — and was built around an atrium and peristyle, with thermal rooms decorated in geometric and figural polychrome mosaics. Two smaller structures to the south came later.
Below those Roman layers lie earlier traces: a first structure from the 1st–2nd century BC points to occupation long before the villa was raised. Elliptical cisterns of Phoenician type, warehouse remains, and early Christian necropolis tombs were also uncovered, as were additional thermal areas found during a second round of excavations in the 1960s. The site sits beside what was the ancient decumano maximo, the main Roman street that ran from Capo Boeo along what is now Via XI Maggio.
Good to know
Entry is free, open around the clock. Come in spring or autumn — summers are hot and shadeless. The adjacent Museo Archeologico Baglio Anselmi holds artifacts from the same ancient city and is worth pairing on the same visit. Allow an easy hour to walk the marked self-guided route.
Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are the most comfortable seasons — temperatures between 19°C and 25°C with manageable sun. Avoid midday visits in July and August when the exposed site offers no shade and temperatures regularly exceed 30°C; the site is fully outdoor with no shelter.

Unfortunately the park is completely abandoned to itself, signals are burnt by the sun and there’s trash everywhere. It’s a pity!
We've been to Pompeii. And Ephesus in Turkey. But this site has the most amazing array of mosaics including what must be among the largest nearly intact ones in the world.

Excellent self walking tour. Well marked and explained and it’s FREE.
Nothing too much there really, just a pile of old stones. General park areas used for locals to dump rubbish , shame.
