It belongs to the Complesso Monumentale San Pietro, a former monastery that now holds the municipal library, historical archives, a civic museum, and a café tucked into what were once the convent kitchens.
The museum runs three distinct collections under one roof: archaeological finds from ancient Lilibeo spanning the 4th century BC to the 2nd century AD, a room dedicated to Garibaldi's landing of May 1860, and a folk traditions section covering the Holy Thursday procession and Sicilian puppet theatre.

The story behind Complesso Monumentale San Pietro
The original monastery was founded in the sixth century by a noblewoman named Adeodata, who financed it herself with authorization from Pope Gregory the Great. In 1418, Benedictine nuns moved from that earlier site into a former Dominican convent, and the complex began to take its current shape — a 16th-century central body, then an 18th-century expansion that added the loggia and the belvedere tower.
The Church of Saints Peter and Paul, attached to the square-plan convent, only reopened for worship in 2022 after years of closure. The conference hall occupies the footprint of the old Cinema del Popolo, a detail that says something about how many lives a building can absorb.

Admission is free. Hours vary by day, so check ahead at 0923/993111 or the official site before arriving. The complex fronts Via Ludovico Anselmi Correale, 12 and is walkable from Piazza della Repubblica. Allow at least an hour, more if the archives interest you.
