Hoan Kiem Lake
At the centre of Hanoi, a lake sits so still some mornings that the red-painted The Huc Bridge appears to float without support. Hoan Kiem — the Lake of the Returned Sword — is only 700 metres long and 11.55 hectares in total, small enough to circle on foot in under half an hour, yet it operates as the city's gravitational centre.
The Turtle Tower rises from a tiny islet roughly in the middle, inaccessible to visitors, which only adds to its pull. On weekends, the surrounding roads close to traffic from seven in the evening, and the whole perimeter becomes an open-air living room for the neighbourhood.

The story behind Hoan Kiem Lake
The lake has held at least four official names. During the Tran Dynasty it served as a naval training ground — Thuy Quan Lake. The Trinh lords later divided it into two bodies of water. It wasn't until Emperor Tu Duc's reign in the nineteenth century that the southern section was renamed Hoan Kiem, honouring a legend rooted four centuries earlier.
That legend belongs to Le Loi, who led the Lam Son Uprising against Ming Chinese rule beginning in 1418. After nine years of fighting, he liberated Vietnam and established the Later Le Dynasty. In 1428, according to the story, a Golden Turtle surfaced on the lake and reclaimed the magical sword that had aided his campaign — returning it to the divine. The name has held ever since.

No entry fee for the lake itself. Ngoc Son Temple costs 30,000 dong and opens daily 8 AM–5 PM. Buses 09A and 09B stop at Ngã 3 Lê Thái Tổ - Hàng Trống; most central hotels are within easy walking distance. Allow three to four hours if you plan to cross The Huc Bridge and take in the temple.
October is the sweet spot: dry, mild temperatures between 20 and 28°C, and the trees along the bank turn a particular shade of gold. November stays calm and cool. Spring visits in February and March are pleasant but come with low cloud and occasional drizzle that softens the light — not unpleasant, just different.

Recommended for tourists to visit here at least once. Despite a lot of people actually walk around, exercises and jog here, it was so pretty here. We went around the sunset time and it's so beautiful. Along the way, you can also see pretty flowers. And it's kinda fun to see the people gather around exercise with the music. Worth to visit. It's kinda hot though here but it was fine.
