Dong Xuan Market
At the northern tip of the Old Quarter, five concrete arches mark the entrance to Dong Xuan Market — Hanoi's largest, and the kind of place where a wholesale bolt of fabric sits one stall over from a pile of fresh morning glory. The building you walk into today dates from 1995, rebuilt after a fire gutted the original French-era structure and erased roughly 4.5 million dollars' worth of stock overnight.
Three floors hold around 2,000 stalls divided loosely by category: clothing and household goods on the upper levels, food at the back of the ground floor. The weekend night market spills onto Dong Xuan Street from around 6pm, where the trade shifts toward souvenirs, snacks, and occasional performances of ca trù and chèo.

Regulars tend to head straight to the rear of the ground floor for breakfast — the food stalls open early and the crowd is local. The weekend night market draws a different pace; prices on small goods are negotiable and the street is closed to traffic, so you can drift without watching for motorbikes. The story behind Dong Xuan Market
The site has been a trading hub since 1804, when the Nguyen Dynasty established a market here to facilitate commerce with foreign merchants. In 1889, the French colonial administration replaced it with a purpose-built covered market — one of Hanoi's principal new structures of that era, its 6,500-square-metre roof supplied by French contractor Paul-François Leyret and its entrance defined by five arches, each dome rising 19 metres high and spanning 25 metres wide.
That original building survived for over a century before a catastrophic fire in 1994. The rebuilt market, completed in 1995, doubled the footprint to nearly 14,000 square metres. In 2005, a relief titled "Hanoi in Winter 1946" was installed beside the market to mark the soldiers who defended the capital that year.
Good to know
The indoor market runs daily roughly 6am–6pm; the outdoor night market runs Friday to Sunday from around 6pm to 10:30pm. Multiple bus lines stop directly outside. No entry fee. Budget at least two hours if you plan to cover all three floors.
