Frazione Minuta
A hundred stone steps bring you into Minuta, one of five hamlets that make up Scala, and the silence when you arrive is the first thing you notice — the kind that belongs to a place where very few people pass through on purpose. At the center of it all sits the Chiesa della Santissima Annunziata, founded in the 11th century and among the oldest churches on the Amalfi Coast, its crypt holding 15th-century frescoes in deep reds, yellows, and greens depicting scenes from the life of St. Nicholas of Bari.
From the small piazza beside the church, the valley opens below you, and if you look carefully you can pick out the hamlet of Pontone and the ruined outline of the 12th-century church of Sant'Eustachio — a reminder that this slope has been continuously inhabited, and repeatedly remade, for well over a millennium.

The story behind Frazione Minuta
Scala is the oldest settlement on the Amalfi Coast, and Minuta shares that deep root. Reliable records begin in the 9th century, when the area was destroyed and rebuilt — partly under Pisan influence — and the hamlet's Church of the Annunziata was founded somewhere between the 9th and 11th centuries, sources varying on the exact date. In the Middle Ages, noble Scala families built palaces and richly decorated churches across these slopes; the remains of an Arab bath near the church of Sant'Eustachio speak to the cosmopolitan reach of those households.
Scala itself fell under the dominion of the Amalfi Republic until 1137, when the Pisans sacked it. Out of this same community came Fra Gerardo Sasso, a Scala monk who founded the Order of the Knights of Malta and built the first Italian-run hospital in the Holy Land.
Good to know
Take the SITA bus (Amalfi–Ravello–Scala line, roughly 30 minutes) and buy your ticket in advance from a tabaccheria or bar displaying the SITA SUD logo — none are sold on board. Not all services reach Minuta itself, so expect a walk from Scala. Spring and early autumn offer the most comfortable temperatures at this elevation.
Minuta sits at roughly 400 metres, which runs 3–5°C cooler than the coast below — welcome in August, worth a layer in March. Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) give you the clearest light and the least company on the trails.

It's a hamlet of Scala, the oldest municipality on the Amalfi Coast. It's from here that the hiking trail to the Valle delle Ferriere begins, a nature reserve among waterfalls and ancient ferns that leads to Amalfi. Minuta is a small district whose center is a charming little square with the Church of the Annunziata. Descending through the village, a charming little road winds through private lemon groves and leads to the ruins of the prestigious Basilica of Sant'Eustachio.
