The story behind Antico Frantoio di Scala
Scala's claim to being the Amalfi Coast's oldest settlement is backed by a medieval record: by 987 it had risen from a simple terra to an episcopal seat under the bishopric of Amalfi, a status it held until 1818. At its peak it counted 130 churches, monasteries, and noble palaces — a density that still surfaces in the stonework around every corner.
Olive cultivation was woven into that civic life from the beginning. The Lattari Mountains above Scala provided the terraced groves; the frantoio provided the means to turn the harvest into oil for cooking, light, and trade. The mill predates most of the documentation that survives about it, which is itself a kind of testament to how ordinary and essential it once was.

Scala is reachable by SITA bus from Amalfi town, a ride of roughly 20 minutes up a winding road. Confirm opening hours locally before visiting — small heritage sites like this often keep irregular schedules and may close without notice. Spring and early autumn are the most comfortable seasons for the climb through the village.

We had such a fantastic experience with Claudio and his wonderful team! The cooking class was absolutely amazing we learned how to make parmigiana, pizza, gnocchi, and tiramisu, all from scratch and with so much fun. Claudio was an incredible host and teacher, making everyone feel welcome and relaxed. The setting, in the beautiful Antico Frantoio in Sorrento, couldn’t have been more perfect authentic, charming, and full of atmosphere. And the pizza (especially the garlic one!) was out of this world 🍕❤️ If you’re looking for a genuine, joyful cooking experience in Sorrento, look no further this is the one!
Very nice restaurant with an amazing view of Sorrento. Especially dinner by the sunset colors would be impressive. The place is very wide with open terrace and indoor. The restaurant is big but if you want to take a seat by the view, it is better to reserve in advance. As I observe, it is popular by locals. The food were very delicious: gnocchi, risotto with lemon and caponata. Highly recommended.
Antico Frantoio was a highlight of my trip to Sorrento. The Fusillo Fresco Alla Nerano was incredible and the salad was fresh and crisp. The atmosphere was lively and vibrant, with attentive and helpful servers. The stunning view added an extra layer of magic to the meal. Highly recommend Antico Frantoio for great food, wonderful service, and unforgettable views!
What an amazing experience. The food, the wine, and the VIEW! lovely staff as well. It was a lot quieter than town as mostly locals go here so we were luckily able to get a table on a Friday night. Prices are very affordable.
Ravioli with ricotta cheese and lemon was so smart. It was so good. Also loved the seafood risotto. Will definitely be back to try other dishes.
