Duomo di Bassano del Grappa (Santa Maria in Colle)
The bell tower at the top of Bassano's oldest hill went up in the twelfth or thirteenth century as a civic signal tower, calling people to the castle rather than to prayer. That origin still shows in the building's bones — it sits inside the Castello degli Ezzelini walls, slightly apart from the town's daily rhythms, reached by a short climb from the famous covered bridge.
The church itself has been rebuilt in layers: a crypt from an earlier structure survives beneath a three-nave basilica raised in the early thirteenth century, then a Baroque interior completed by the 1690s. The Corinthian pilasters, the eight altars, and G.B. Volpato's ceiling frescoes belong to that final phase.

People who make it up the hill tend to linger at the two altarpieces by Leandro dal Ponte — son of the more famous Jacopo Bassano — a Nativity and a Lapidation of Saint Stephen. The 1796 Dacci organ is still there, intact. Access is genuinely limited, so checking Sunday morning hours before you climb saves a wasted trip.

A document from around 998 records the earliest nucleus of the church, likely commissioned by Bishop Girolamo of Vicenza. By the early thirteenth century that original structure had become a crypt, with a new three-nave basilica built above it; the church was elevated to collegiate status in July 1223.
The present Baroque character dates from two building campaigns: a 1636–1641 reconstruction of the facade and three new chapels, made as a vow during a bubonic plague epidemic, followed by a complete rebuilding of walls, roof, and ceiling between 1682 and 1684, with decoration finished by 1690. A major structural and fresco restoration ran from 1985 to 1988.

The Duomo opens on Sunday mornings; a volunteer group maintains access, and one mass per year falls in January for the feast of Saint Bassiano. Entry is free. It sits a few minutes' walk from Ponte degli Alpini — combine the two in a single morning loop.

It is located within the courtyard of Ezelini Castle. Built and expanded over the years, it now has a single nave with several altars and altarpieces. The ceiling paintings are also beautiful. Free admission.
