A fortified settlement rose on Colle di Giano around the tenth century, established by the bishops of Belluno and likely built on the footprint of an earlier Roman site. By the thirteenth century a proper castle had taken shape, and through the 1300s noble families built a village around it. The tower — 'La Campana' — survives as the most legible remnant of those medieval layers.
The hill's story didn't stop at the Middle Ages. In 1827 Bartolomeo Gera commissioned architect Giuseppe Jappelli to design Villa Gera on the slope; a decade later Giovanni De Min covered its interiors with historical and mythological frescoes. German occupation during the Second World War, and a fire in 1943, destroyed part of that work. The castle itself was restored in 1990, and the Civic Museum — paintings by Pordenone and Palma il Giovane among them — has occupied the tower since 1946.
