On a small piazzetta off Via Gradillo, a street that winds between close-set stone houses, you'll find one of Ravello's oldest churches sitting quietly apart from the grander names on the tourist circuit. Santa Maria a Gradillo is compact — it holds around seventy people at most — but step inside and the proportions feel considered rather than cramped: three naves divided by pointed arches on columns whose spolia capitals are carved with acanthus leaves, volutes, and lions.

The floor holds a medieval mosaic of the Tree of Life, a symbol of rebirth that has been here far longer than the modern steel-and-synthetic-marble platform that now recreates it. From the church's position you can look out toward the sea, the surrounding villages, and the Lattari Mountains beyond.

💛 What travellers fall for

People who linger here tend to notice the wooden roof trusses of the nave first — exposed and unvarnished, a contrast to the elaborately ribbed vaulting in the side aisles. If the church is locked, the Cathedral's pastor is the right person to contact. The piazzetta itself is worth a few minutes regardless.

The story behind Church of Santa Maria a Gradillo

The church predates its neighbour San Giovanni del Toro, with origins traced to the 11th century and possibly built over an earlier structure. By the 12th century it had taken something close to its current form: a Latin-cross, apsidal plan with a crypt sitting two metres below the present street level. The social distinction embedded in its founding is specific — Santa Maria a Gradillo served the town's common people, while San Giovanni del Toro was reserved for noble families.

Beyond liturgy, the church functioned as a meeting place for Ravello's medieval parliament. In 1771 the transept was converted into a cemetery. The dome was destroyed in 1899. Subsequent restorations, including work at the end of the 20th century, replaced the floor with its current modular surface while preserving the original mosaic design.

Yep. It’s a church The oldest church in Ravello it seems. Attended a wedding with a bunch of friends from guam and they have a sound system that made everything loud enough for the guests to hear The harp violin opera singer combo was very cool and ravello is a beautiful space.

I married my wife in this church in 2007. It's beyond beautiful (just like my wife was). We divorced as she went a bit mental.
