Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Scale
Santa Maria delle Scale sits at the exact seam between Ragusa's two selves — the modern upper town and the ancient Ibla below — and the 340 steps that climb to its door are part of its name and its identity. You arrive slightly breathless, which turns out to be the right way to arrive.
The church carries centuries of revision on its facade: Cistercian monks built the original structure in the thirteenth century, the 1693 earthquake rotated its orientation by ninety degrees, and later rebuilding folded the old Gothic apses into the side aisle as portals. Inside, those three archways — two Gothic-Catalan, one Renaissance — survive intact, and a polychrome terracotta altarpiece from Caltagirone, dated 1538, depicts the Transit of the Virgin in careful, unhurried detail.

Check the door before making the climb; the church closes without warning, and the Saturday morning window (10:00–12:30) is your most reliable chance to see the Gagini-school terracotta.
The story behind Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Scale
The site's origins are layered. Cistercian monks from the Abbey of Santa Maria di Roccadia in Lentini established a hospital here — the Cataratte — in the twelfth century, which was later converted into a church and eventually renamed Santa Maria delle Scale for the long staircase it crowns.
The earthquake of 1693, which reshaped much of southeastern Sicily, left the right aisle standing while destroying the rest. Rebuilding rotated the entire church ninety degrees, so what had been the apse end became the entrance to the side aisle — you can read the Gothic-Catalan arches there as survivors rather than ornament. A second major enlargement followed in the second half of the eighteenth century, giving the church its current Baroque character.

Free entry. Most reliably open Saturday 10:00–12:30 and 15:00–17:30, Sunday afternoons, and around Tuesday and Friday evening mass at 5:00 PM — though hours shift without notice. The church is about 1.3 km from Ragusa station. Budget 20–30 minutes inside, more if you stay for the terrace view.

Incredible viewpoint of the town and surrounding area. Not too strenuous to get to - definitely worth it.
Lovely spot to sit and relax while overlooking the town. We missed the timing to go inside, but had a really lovely time sitting and taking in the spectacular view. Worth every step up the stairs.
Church closed 3 days in a row (Feb25). I tried mornings and afternoons. Google times are wrong. According to a paper on the door, Mass is on Tuesdays and Fridays at 17:00h. I guess right now they only opened at those times. Views from the stairs by the church are amazing though.
