Birthplace of Luigi Pirandello
Four kilometres outside Agrigento, along the SS115 road past Villaseta, a late-eighteenth-century farmhouse sits on a plateau above the sea in a district the locals call Chaos — Caos in Italian, a name Pirandello himself turned into personal mythology. He was born here on 28 June 1867, not by plan but because his mother Caterina Ricci Gramitto had fled a cholera epidemic raging through the city that summer.
The house belongs to that particular category of birthplaces that feel genuinely inhabited by the person they commemorate. Six themed rooms on the upper floor trace Pirandello's life through manuscripts, letters, first editions with handwritten dedications, and the Greek vase that carried his ashes from Rome back to Sicily. A path through the fields leads to the memorial stone, carved by Marino Mazzacurati, where the urn now rests.

The story behind Birthplace of Luigi Pirandello
The house predates Pirandello by nearly a century, built as a rural property of the Ricci-Gramitto family — the bourgeois professional family from which his mother descended. It became a birthplace by accident: the 1867 cholera epidemic drove Caterina here from Agrigento, and her son arrived in the middle of summer on the olive-and-oak-dotted plateau.
An ammunition explosion in 1943 damaged the building; it was declared a national monument in 1949 and acquired by the Region of Sicily in 1952, after which renovations gave it its current form. Since 1987 it has operated as a single institution with the Biblioteca Luigi Pirandello in Agrigento, and a complete revamp in 2021 updated the museum experience throughout.

Open daily 9:00–19:30, last entry 30 minutes before closing; the tomb closes one hour before sunset. Admission is €4 full price, €2 reduced. The site is wheelchair accessible. Confirm current hours via official channels before visiting, as multiple sources list slightly different times.
Spring (mid-April to mid-May) and early autumn (mid-September to mid-October) are the most comfortable seasons for the outdoor walk to the tomb and for the plateau views — temperatures are mild and the light is clear. Summer visits are perfectly possible for the indoor rooms, but the plateau can be genuinely hot above 30°C with no shade to speak of.
