From the grounds of Villa Guariglia in the Raito district, the land drops away in terraces of garden and cultivated earth before opening onto the Tyrrhenian Sea. The Torretta Belvedere — a small watchtower capped with decorative crenellations that are more whimsical than defensive — stands at the centre of it all, now home to the Museo della Ceramica since 1981.
Inside, the collection moves through passageways and up staircases, tracing Vietri sul Mare's ceramic tradition from the 17th century through to the present. The second level holds a library and biographical material on the artists who shaped the town's distinctive aesthetic.

The story behind Belvedere di Vietri sul Mare
Villa Guariglia was the private home of Raffaele Guariglia — Italian diplomat, foreign minister, and Knight of the Order of Malta — who donated the entire property to the Provincial Administration of Salerno upon his death in 1970. A decade later, the Torretta Belvedere, the old watchtower on the villa's grounds, was repurposed to house the Museo della Ceramica, which opened in 1981.
The collection it holds reflects a longer story: German artists Richard Dölker and Irene Kowaliska arrived in Vietri between the 1920s and 1940s, introducing new forms and colour formulas — including the particular yellows still associated with the town — that redirected a centuries-old craft tradition.

Vietri sul Mare is roughly 10 minutes by train from Salerno. The Torretta Belvedere sits in Raito, uphill from the town centre — a local bus or taxi is the practical choice. Late April through June or late September through October offer the most comfortable conditions for exploring the gardens.
Spring and early autumn are the most comfortable seasons for the gardens and terraces; summers are sunny and dry but can be hot on exposed ground. Winter days are mild and often clear, though the weather turns variable.

The Case Colorate is truly an impressive sight and well worth a visit. In fact, the entire town is one of the most remarkable places we’ve seen in Italy so far. What makes it unique is the ceramics – present on every corner, adding a special charm everywhere you look.
The 'vicolo' is just another decorated alleway within the coast. Yes! It is renowned for its vibrant façades painted in light blue, pink, and turquoise, and densely adorned with hand-painted ceramic tiles, but there's nothing else to it.
Absolutely ridiculous – this is nothing more than a decorated residential building. No history, no cultural significance, nothing that would make it worth a visit. The fact that this is listed as a “sight” says a lot about the area. If this counts, then literally any house could be marked as an attraction: “a house with nice windows,” “a house with faded paint”… Completely meaningless and not worth the walk. But then again – what else is there to do around here?
“Case Colorate” is just one little house painted in blue and pink with a lot of decorative ornaments. In my opinion, you can definitely skip this “attraction”, the buildings near the Duomo are more colourful and some of them are cermaic shops where you can buy a little souvenir from Vietri sul Mare.
